Thermal Control Electronics for space applications

Thermal Control Electronic Units are multi-channel, closed-loop, analog, heater controllers. Rated for use in GEO orbit (e.g., satellite busses, launch vehicles, and payloads), the robust design and construction apply to numerous aerospace use cases. Each channel has an independent on/off heater output driver, an associated temperature sensor, and an externally configurable setpoint. This channel-specific setpoint will correspond to a temperature for which the Thermal Management Unit will ‘turn on’ its heater when its associated temperature sensor senses the setpoint temperature. The heater will turn off when the temperature sensor warms to a fixed hysteresis value above the setpoint temperature. SOE MOTS Thermal Control Electronics supports 2-wire and 4-wire RTDs for temperature sensing and pre-manufacturing customizable hysteresis.

Description

The Space Heater Hardware Adjustable Controller (SHHAC) controller is a 5-channel, closed-loop heater controller. The application was for a GEO satellite with a terrestrial-looking telescope. The telescopes sensitive optical system needed to be thermally monitored and controlled to prevent damage. SHHAC was selected because it provide a configurable thermal controller that would be qualified for a long-term Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) mission while minimizing development effort and overhead while optimizing for tight timelines and efficiency.
