Acoustics engineering involves creating and receiving vibrations through the air and other materials. This often overlaps with audio engineering, and many of the problems solved are related to audio systems. Acoustics engineering often requires electrical and mechanical engineering to create ultrasonic and infrasound systems. SOE has used acoustics engineering to create an electronically steerable audio phased array, speaker cabinets, and microphone systems.
